Want to really learn how linux works?

www.linuxfromscratch.org
Yes, Linux from Scratch is probably one of the best tools to really get your feet wet in the innards of linux.  It takes you step by step though building a linux system from the ground up.  It is something that can be done over time inside of a virtual machine in Qemu, VMware, or whatever other virtualization system you prefer.  I prefer VMware myself as I've worked with it the longest, hence it's more comfortable.  The ability to take snapshots is wonderful when you're in a complex project.  Trust me when I tell you to push that snapshot button after every major step you complete because when you make a mistake it will save you a lot of time as you can just revert to the last snapshot. (It's also great for servers but that's another topic)
Now this isn't a project to rush through and it may take you a few days to a few weeks but I promise you when you do get finished you will have a much deeper understanding and appreciation for what's under the hood.  If you're a linux geek then you'll probably be giddy when you first boot into your hand built linux system.
This is a bit on the advanced side of things but people looking for such a project will find it worth the time.

Awesome suggestion Chayak. I

Awesome suggestion Chayak. I am going to start this weekend! Thanks so much for this contribution. I will try to remember to mention it on the show!

I can remember when I first

I can remember when I first got Suse 5.2 installed and running I was so happy. I just looked when it was released May 04th 1998. Man thats a long time ago, I've only recently thrown away the 6 cd install box I bought. Learned a lot with that, but Gentoo kicked my ass for so long trying to do a stage 1 install. I learned so much using that, but family and other things take over your life and I just needed a distro that worked right from the install.

Abertay Linux Society are

Abertay Linux Society are about to start a communal project using LFS, the idea being  at one of our meetings, the foundation will be laid  , going thru the first steps to show any pitfalls that may incurred during the first stage of setting up the tool chain etc.  Then we wander off home (after a few measures of liquid inspiration) and progress ourseleves. Then use the  Taylug mailing list &/or  forums to help each other out.  Anyone who fancies joining in would be very welcome.

One way..

Thats definately one way to be half-ways a system admin when you are done. I have always wanted to build a Gentoo to learn the deep innards of linux. I think Ill try both.
