A request and a suggestion.
Hi Basementeers,
First the request. I know it's early in the game, but I'd like to know how to tie Apache to a DNS.
Now the suggestion. Go to http://linuxbasement.com. Stare at that screen for a minute. Now click "forums" or something and watch closely to see what changes. Right. Nothing, at least on my browser. Sure it went to the forums, but you can't tell without paging down. You might want to shrink the vertical size of the top content, or include bread crumbs like Linux Basement >Forums at the top of the page.
Thanks again for all the fine work. I'm listening.
Best,
Tom
(Hey. Captcha is gone.)

There are a lot of ways to do the DNS. This is more of a networking topic, but I may be able to get you straight. The BIG question is, do you have a static IP?
Yeah I noticed the content at the top is too long, because I added the torrent information. I'll be taking the torrent info down soon and that should solve the problem. I might play with the block settings to see if I can get something more web friendly. Thanks for the heads up Tom, and thanks for all of your valuable contributions to the site!
Chad
Static IP?
Do I have a static IP? The answer is yes, but not really. It stays the same for weeks, months, or even years, and then changes without notice. Let's call it static for now.
BTW this isn't super important. It would be cute to point a domain server at my machine, and then have the machine watching for traffic from that domain somehow, but I don't want to hog your time.
Best,
Tom
P.S. Here goes my 3rd time trying to get past captcha. The old one was better. It just asked math questions and such in plain text.
Dynamic DNS
I haven't really done this, but I think you want to look into a dynamic DNS service. A Google search pointed to a Wikipedia article and a list of DDNS providers.
Try this web site for info: http://www.technopagan.org/dynamic/
Hope this points you in the right direction.
Hey Tom which captcha was
Hey Tom which captcha was giving you problems? I'll disable it?
Captcha answer.
Hey, Chad,
The one that was cool for me:
The first few times I posted I got the easy one. It was in plain text. Sometimes it asked me to solve a math problem like 6+? = 11. Other times it made up some short nonsense words and asked something like "Which one is out of alphabetical order?" or the like. The main thing was, plain text.
Today I was presented with graphics of several really distorted tiny characters . I've seen that before, and it would be OK if the graphic wasn't so small. I'm running an old 16" monitor and a much older pair of eyes. Keeping the graphic version would be fine if you could give it a little more real estate. Thanks!
Best,
Tom
Nuts. Captcha isn't disabled. I just scrolled down and there's the danged graphic. Taking a shot.
no mo captcha
Ok, I disabled captcha for the forums now. It is only enabled for registration and emails. Hopefully that will be enough to keep out the spam bots. As for the DNS question, I'm going to take it into email with you, because there are certain things I'm not sure I want to teach the mass public about because of security concerns.
Web Server DNS
I have a dynamic IP address from the local phone company. Using https://www.dyndns.com/ and a small program on my machine, http://haliburton.homelinux.net gets updated whenever the IP changes. It works very well for me.
