IRC server experience

I would love to hear an episode about how you got your IRC channel running.

Internet Relay Chat

In summary:

  • Choose an IRC service network such as FreeNode, DALnet, EFnet, etc. #LinuxBasement is on FreeNode since it is specifically for open source discussion.
  • Start your IRC client program (Xchat, Irssi, Pidgin, etc) and connect to the network, in this case, chat.freenode.net
  • At this point you should use Nickserv to password protect your nickname.  For help on this type "/msg nickserv help"
  • To create your channel, just type "/join #youchannelname"
  • At this point, use the instructions in "/msg chanserv help" to register the channel to you.

That is very brief, but will get you on the way to owning your very own IRC channel.

ircd

irc looks like it would run on a minimal machine, but a nightnare to control. I started one locally on on of my servers, there seems to be a lot to learn. I can see if you do not have some real experience with it, then you might get bitten in the back. rtfm time....
