Hello my Fellow Linux Friends!

Good day Linux Basement community!

New listener here, great work Chad lovin’ your casts, still working my way through season one, but figured I should join the community discussion here in the forums and what better what better way to start then with my own intro.

Who am I? My name is Eric Degen, I live in the DFW area (Dallas / Fort Worth, TX) when I’m not crisscrossing the US on business. Married with three teenagers I’m the quintessential Football/Soccer/Baseball Dad. When I’m not working, or spending time with the fam, I enjoy Cooking, Reading (Sci-fi/History), Photography, Travel and of course Geeking out especially on Linux.

What do I do? Professionally, I work as an ERP Software consultant. This brings me in contact with pretty much every OS and Database in the business world as I’m working with my customers to address their IT and Business needs. I’m also a freelance writer for tech publications and contribute at Techdirt.

What’s with this Linux Stuff? I’ve been a geek pretty much since birth, name a major piece of technology of the last 25 years and I have most likely worked on it. But while I’ve played with Linux off and on since back in the mid 90’s (Slackware and Redhat), It’s been the last year that has turned me into a major Linux and OSS proponent. I won’t bore you with the details, if you are dieing to see my rapid conversion just go back and read the Linux tagged stories on my blog (http://www.degen.net)

What do I Run? I’m pretty much an Ubuntu junkie – can’t get enough of this wonderful distro. I do like Mint quite a bit and of course I cant help but run into Fedora and SUSE from time to time.

My Systems? My main box is a Notebook (due to heavy travel) which I dual boot XP/Gutsy, same config on my home desktop, most of the family’s systems are Windows, but I’m converting them gradually to Ubuntu (Great story about my son’s new notebook – click here!) Home network is Ubuntu Servers hosting VMware based Windows 2003 Servers. I’ve begun employing this same architecture in our corporate environment as well vitalizing Windows atop Ubuntu 64-bit servers – it works FANTASTIC.

Well that is probably enough drivel from me for now – need less to say, I’m happy to be amongst you my fell tech sojourners and look forward to meeting you all in the forums. If I can be of any help, don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m on twitter and skype (username: ericdegen on both) pretty much all the time and don’t mind to chat at all if I’m not in the middle of a customer meeting, so say hi.

Chad you are too kind ;)

To start with thanks for the warm welcome, and I'm hardly "such an experienced user" - I'm learning lots from each of your casts! The great thing about Linux is there's always more to learn and grow in.

And I have envy of your 4 year old on that EEE! ;) I'm now waiting till the EEE 900 comes out now.
