Episode 8 - Slappin the Drupal

I think the pop filter did a good job. How did you like the sound quality this week?
Also, would you use an IRC chat if we had one?
Did you like the song this week? I prefer to think of myself as the Sintra of the linux world... hahahahahah
Chad

IRC

In the show notes you asked about how to register a channel on IRC

When you're on irc,  type /join #linuxbasement   Then type /msg chanserv register

This will register the channel to you.  Typing /msg chanserv help       will be... helpful!!

I don't get it... where

I don't get it... where would I be registering?

I was assuming you'd be

I was assuming you'd be using something like irc.freenode.net

Thanks for all the help

Thanks for all the help Daniel!
For everyone, we now have a chanel over at irc.freenode.net
#linuxbasement
See you there!

Assorted comments.

Hey Chad,
Great episode. Thanks!

I didn't notice the pop before, but the sound of this episode is really good. I need to get somewhere close to that. Is the filter a physical wrap for the mic, or an electronic device?

During the bit about TWIT, you said, "The tide is turning." For some reason I thought that the next sentence would be, "The people are learning." That's a lyric line, baby. No rights reserved. Go nuts :)

IRC. Not a fan at all. Why? Because I'm a cranky old fart who takes his time reading, and types in English, the way the FSM intended. I have asked questions on IRC. Maybe someone answered. Beats hell out of me. I mean OMFG. The sht flies bi and makes n0 fkn s3ns3. By the time I translate one "sentence" I'm in the dust a few miles back.

Maybe a low traffic channel wouldn't be so bad. It might help me to adapt to the culture shock. I'll give it a shot when I remember how to install and use a client.

Reply notification setup in profile. Nice. You can click for a notification without that, but clicking the link in the resulting email takes you to about a yard from where you expected to land. I'll try this out!

Holy crap! I'm listening right now. I'm a moderator? Are you smiling? Do you think I'm funny? Drop and give me 50, maggot!
Oh. Wait. If I accept a job on another podcast, I lose my plush corner office in the Going Linux tower. Sorry :)

Unrealated:
The good news. I bought my first ever wireless optical usb mouse. Turned off the computer, plugged in the stick, and it just worked. Very very nice. Thanks, Ubuntu!

The bad news. The freaking package was heavy plastic, welded shut so you almost need a blow torch to get it open. I used my pocket knife instead. It's sharp as a razor, so the plastic didn't have a chance.  (You see where this is going?) In my haste, I planted the knife in my leg, screwing up a really nice pair of jeans. The blade saved the depth data, as it worked like a dip stick. Just a bit less than an inch penetration. Doh! Luckily, it didn't hit any gushy blood vessels.

Damned if I can find a curved needle right now  so it's all taped up. I'll get a needle tomorrow and finish the job and fix my jeans. But the mouse works great!

Hmm...Still too much blood in my alcohol. Have to fix that.... L83R

Best,
Tom

Standard English

Typing in standard English on IRC is a pain. There is a reason  for "geek speak." Like John Wesley said there is a Methodist to the madness.

LOL... I'm not much into

LOL... I'm not much into geek speak myself, so I wont get crazy on the IRC. I just figured I may as well have it open when I'm hanging about.
The mic pop filter is this one:
http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemID=26811
Keeping in mind that I used to be a singer, I have a real mic stand, and the mic I use is the samson USB condenser, so this thing just hooks to the stand and swings in front of the mic when you need it. It has several layers of mesh fiber that redirects the P puff and makes for nicey nice sound.
Dang man sorry to hear you cut yourself!
I'll get to work on Tom's linux song to cheer you up:P

I'm using Xchat for the IRC

I'm using Xchat for the IRC channel. It seems pretty good so far.
sudo apt-get install xchat

Microphone POP Filter

Chad:
There are still objectional "pops" in the audio.  The solution is simple.  Just talk across the microphone, and not directly into it.  Broadcasters do this and it works.

Yeah, being that I didn't

Yeah, being that I didn't buy a home studio just yet, I'll never get rid of All of the pops.

Chad, big improvement in

Chad, big improvement in sound quality from that little filter.  Some people use them some don't but if it works for you then use it.

I'm finally in Texas by the way and in my new place so I need to get off my rear and record another episode :P

Cancelled GoDaddy.  They

Cancelled GoDaddy.  They were really good about it.  I was on hold for 10 minutes, and practising how I could talk them into refunding me.  I had received a 10% discount on the hosting with the LAS code, and an $8 discount on the domain because I paid for hosting at the same time, so I was expecting them to either say no, or to make me pay full price for the domain.  But they didn't.  Just took off for one months hosting ($3.99) and let me keep the domain for the $2 I had paid.

So, ANhosting here I come!  Chad, Thanks for the suggestion about getting them to refund as they couldn't fulfill my hosting needs.  I would have probably just written it off, and not even asked.  So that's $40 towards the HD tv I am trying to convince my wife I "need"

I'm glad it worked out! Let

I'm glad it worked out! Let me know how it goes with AN hosting. I've been very happy with them so far. I did have to pay an extra 20 bucks a year for ssh but it was worth it. Its practically all I use now. I can't remember the last time I ftpd in. HDTV you are brave... don't you have a baby? Im waiting untill both of my kids are five because I can just picture peanut butter smeared on my nice LCD TV hehehehe.
chad

I am all set up with an

I am all set up with an account, just waiting on "the tech guy" to set me up on the server.  I am too new to ssh to use it yet, although I did install Putty on my mobile phone today, to try connecting to my home pc.  So many things on my list to learn!

Yes I have a 16 month old boy, and another one due end of next month.  My son is pretty good; when I say no, he listens, so hopefully there'll be no peanut butter near the tv!  I could always ceiling mount it and lie on the floor!  How old are your kids?

That's awesome man, kids are

That's awesome man, kids are great. Mine are almost 2 and almost 4 and I am having no more:) My house is a 24 hour Circus. My son, first born, was an angel, he still is, and has always been a well behaved social thinker.
My daughter, well, so far she's making us pay for my son's good behavior... she is wide open. It is hallarious mind you, but its one of those things where if you take your eyes off her for 3 seconds, she's standing on the dining room table swinging at the chandelier with a toy (true story).
Just cover the TV with plastic for 5 years lol.
hey we got an irc chanel going, so drop in sometime at #linuxbasement
Chad

My Kids

Speaking of kids, mine are 23 (daughter) and 17 (son). Still need the TV covered. :-)

Would a second database be a

Would a second database be a good idea? One for running Drupal, and a second for Gallery?  I used two on GoDaddy, but am trying to use only one on ANhosting.  Is there any advantage to having 2?

I would keep them seperate

I would keep them seperate simply for the reason of upgrades or server changes later in life. It would compliate things if you kept them in the same database.
