Episode 7 - train wreck

Well, it has to happen now and then. My recording sucked. It sounds aweful. I was trying something new to see if i could get rid of the pops I've been having, and I made everything worse. I may do some purchasing this week to try and remedy the problems I've been having. I hope everyone can stomach through the episode.
Chad
**UPDATE** I got fed up listening to the episode again and bought a nice brand new pop filter for my mic. We'll see how it works next week!

BitTorrent Client

For a good BitTorrent client, I'd recommend Transmission.

You can build it from the source located here:
http://www.transmissionbt.com/download.php

It also happens to be in the Ubuntu repository, if you happen to be using that.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy-backports/net/transmission

The Linux GTK+ version is a little behind the main Mac OS X version, but it's still quite good. Check it out if you haven't ;)

Cool I will try that sucka

Cool I will try that sucka out tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: BitTorrent Client

How does Transmission compare with Deluge?  Until yesterday I had been using ktorrent.  Like Chad, I'd moved to ktorrent from Azureus.  Azureus just seemed so slow/buggy/resouce-hoggy (I'm on 64-bit Ubuntu)
ktorrent is great, but yesterday I installed Deluge, as I had heard a lot of good things about it, plus its GTK.
Haven't actually downloaded anything with Deluge yet, as I had a torrent or two left on ktorrent.
-------
And, through the magic that is "edit post" I can update my feeling on Deluge!

Default install is "Compact Allocation" which means it downloads the files in order.  If you have 12 songs/episodes, it will download them in order, starting with track1/episode1.  This may be ideal for some, especially if you wanted to watch a TV program season in order, rather than have to wait for the whole season to download, you can get episode 1 first, then it starts on ep2.

However, I wanted to continue seeding a torrent that I had already downloaded in ktorrent.  I needed Deluge to allocate the space for all files, then exit Deluge and paste in the files I had already downloaded.

I did this by going to Preferences - Downloads - check box: "Full Allocation" & “Enable selecting files for torrents before loading.”

If you want to edit the file selection after a torrent has been loaded, enable the “Torrent Files” plugin.
Other plugins are available, I use the Speed limit, Torrent peers & pieces.

Still only on my first hour of usage, but I like it.  It seems you can set it to be as basic or as complex as you need it to be. Default though is basic.

RE: BitTorrent Client

I was a big fan of Azureus on a certain well known non-free operating system, but I have never had any luck getting it to run well on Linux - Fedora 6 and 7, Ubuntu Edgy and Feisty. I think it might have something to do with the free Java. Perhaps this will change as Sun Java is open sourced. I haven't tried it with Fedora 8 or Gutsy because I really like KTorrent. I'll take a look at Transmission and Deluge, but KTorrent seems pretty feature complete.

Chad, I like Wordpress as much as the next guy, but I can't wait for you to get back to Drupal...

Hey Chad just to let you

Hey Chad just to let you know if they already have a router with NAT and port fowarding then they can foward any port they want from the outside to port 22 internally. That way you can use the regular connections inside and only worry about changing the port you're connecting to when you're connecting from outside the network.

Good point Brandon! I still

Good point Brandon! I still like to change the /etc/ssh setting because it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. But if you know how to forward ports on your router, this is the way to go!

More torrent stuff, and other things.

Hey,

The tracker is down? It still looks ok to me. So far I've uploaded, (ready?), 21.5 Gigs for a share ratio of  17.6. There are not any leechers right now, but there were this morning. 5 weeks and 2 days later. How cool is that?

My torrent client of choice? It's utorrent. Ok. Yeah. It's a windows app running under wine. Stop throwing things at me. The "u" in utorrent really has a tail on both sides of the "u", meaning "micro".  It's super light weight as far as hogging resources. Even when it's hauling ass, it only uses a couple or three percentage points on my sorry old machine. Azureus and others I've tried are fatty, fatty  hogs in comparison. It's really rich in features. For instance:
When I click on a torrent link, I'm asked where to save the torrent file. The file browser goes to the last place that I saved one, which is /home/tom/torrentfiles. My utorrent prefs are set to monior that dir and start the download. It happens within 5 seconds.
Oh, just try it. You know you want to.

One caveat: Every now and then it seems to lock your desktop. Don't worry. Everything is still running. It's an optical illusion. Just right click the utorrent icon in the dock, and hit "Hide/Show utorrent". All will be well. It's a wine thing.

About splitting torrent. Big pet peeve of mine. There is just no reason to do it. Bit torrent splits the files into smaller packets, all nicely error checked. There is a really good reason not to do it. Once the download is complete, I want to extract all the files and see what I have. At the same time, I want to keep seeding, so I have to keep all of those files. Yeah. Double the drive space for no reason at all. JMO

Ok. Now I'm off to listen to the Wordpress section. Cool!

Best,
Tom

Yeah good call Tom. I guess

Yeah good call Tom. I guess I kind of mis-spoke. I actually should have said that I would no longer be seeding and I took the site link off of this site. But you all are welcome to seed as long as you'd like. I think the torrent was a great success and I plan to do another soon.
I have so much to talk about this upcoming episode i have no idea how I'm going to fit it all in. I've had a crazy week. I learned way more about ldap then I ever wanted to know.
hope you like the wordpress stuff. i'm working on more drupal, but it seems like i can't get enough time to pull together a new tutorial. we'll see what happens.

Loving Drupal!

The other night I sat down and started my delve into Drupal!

I bought myself a domain and economy webhosting at GoDaddy.com and using the Linux Action Show code I got 10% off! (code: Linux1)

The hosting is $3.99 a month, and the domain was only $2 because I'd bought hosting. So, cheap and cheerful, but very full featured.  They provide Drupal and Wordpress for you (among MANY other things) and I had my default page immediately.

I wanted a website that our family can go to and get photos and videos of us and our son (soon to be "son's").  My wife's parents are in Sweden and my mum's family are in Italy, so I wanted a central point they could go to, rather than emailing pics to a million different people.

All excited I was, until 3am (why does coffee always give me insomnia?!)
I was stuck.  I wanted a photo gallery, so I uploaded the Acidsee module, but it would not show up in the admin-modules section. Other modules worked, so I knew it wasn't ALL my fault, but gave up with it and tried Gallerix, which was ok, but I didn't like it.  Then tried Gallery/Gallery2.  That worked, and I liked it!

It wasn't painless, as I couldn't work out how to configure it from reading the documentation.  Then I looked in the gallery2 directory and saw a file named index.php   Navigating to that page on my hosted Drupal site took me to the config page.  A glorious sight it was!

So after much configuring, I am starting to really get into it.  So much stuff you can tweak, and I realised why Chad had been saying how cool it is. Got myself a great looking photo gallery.  Themed the site with the orange BealeStreet Roople theme.  CAPTCHA is up and running, and I'm going to install Wordpress next.  Excited about Drupal? Yes I am!

RE: Loving Drupal Galleries!

Sounds like you are making good progress, Daniel.

Galleries are a big part of the Drupal site I am working on. I was never able to get Gallery2 to work on my webhost, so I haven't tried that Drupal Module.

I have had pretty good luck making galleries using CCK and Views and Thickbox using these instructions:

drupal.org/node/144725

What I haven't got to work is a slick page that lets you choose which gallery you want. I envision an array of thumbnails that can be clicked to take the viewer to the various galleries. I have tried creating custom data type using CCK and Link, which I can show in a grid using Views. But I haven't figured out how to make it the work so that when I click on the thumbnail I go to the gallery instead of the full image node for the thumbnail. I read one place that I might have be able to fix this with theming. Any ideas?

I would really like to come up with a Drupal Module that uses Highslide JS. I have been able to hack it in and make it work, but nothing I'd want to roll out across a whole website.
vikjavev.no/highslide/

I'd love to see what you have done with your galleries.

Chris

Daniel that is awesome man.

Daniel that is awesome man. I actually use Gallery2 on my personal site as well to share photos with our family that is scattered throughout the states.  You may want to look into the gallery module for drupal. It integrates a nice customizable package into drupal so you can have blocks that have highlight photos straight from gallery2. Its nice. You can see an example at www.cwolly.com. I'll proably regret giving out my personal site. My wife actually maintains it. But anyway, you can see the gallery module giving random images up in the right corner when you go there.
Your excitement over the power that is so simple to obtain is exactly why I do this podcast. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and keep up the great work.
Also, congrats on the soon to be baby!
Chad

Alas, I should have

Alas, I should have mentioned you can also use drupal exclusivly as a gallery, but it takes a lot of customization. I've done one implementation of it so far. You can see it at www.mcelhaneycentral.com.
I used this tutorial to set it up:
http://drupal.org/node/144725
Pretty damn cool stuff.
Another note, it may be worth checking out coppermine
http://coppermine-gallery.net/
One other cool note... gallery and gallery2's web site is powered by.....
yes, that's right... DRUPAL baby!

My Test Sites

I've got my Drupal website setup at:
<http://haliburton.homelinux.net/drupal/>
and my WordPress site at:
<http://haliburton.homelinux.net/wordpress/>

Neither are exactly the way I want them yet, but there is very little time invested so far. A gallery in next on the 2-do list.

Pete I really like the

Pete I really like the wordpress theme man. The pictures are nice too... you are doing a good job blogging. I've never been a good blogger!

Good Jobs

Thanks, but I just found the theme. Not much modification done to it yet. Regarding blogging, I've always liked to write, and share things I've found or experienced. I'm going to add some of my stories to my Drupal site soon. <http://petesplace2.webhop.net/>

The pictures are easy to add with Flock, as is blogging in general. I just right-click on what I want to talk about, and click "Blog This." Then write a couple of sentences and "Publish." I can go back later and add to it. Pictures can be dragged over or pasted.

I'm not sure I would use WordPress if the Drupal blogging ability was just a bit stronger, especially the archiving. If can find a theme for Drupal which matches what I have in WordPress, then it would be more seemless.

there is a module called

there is a module called "archive" for drupal that does the same as the wordpress archive block. Theming is a whole nother story. I basically found a theme that was similar, and then changed the default graphics to my own. Theming is tough stuff.

Archive

I have Archive installed, but either it doesn't do what I want, or I don't have it configured properly. Doesn't really matter  now that I have Wordpress though. Not a lot more space used. I think I will install Gallery2 and link that to Drupal. Did I hear something about a recipe module?

Gallery integration!

I looked at what you had done with the gallery modules showing random images in the right corner.  I tried that out on my site, and it looked great (the main page was pretty empty as I'd focussed all my attention on the Photos section)  One problem I cannot fix with it though: When I first did the Gallery Grid Block I put had 2 rows, 2 columns.  I changed the pixel size to 150, but went back to 90.  After I went back to 90px the 2nd row had an orange background.  I couldn't get rid of it, and I don't think it was like that before. I am almost 100% sure it wasn't as it looks so strange, surely I would have noticed before?  I added 2 more rows, and the 4th row does it too. Weird!
Take a look:  http://www.danielandtess.com
I've now got a videos page.  I wanted to stream video using the ffmpeg plugin.  I set it all up and it worked, but the file size of the original was 30mb and it stayed that size when I added it into gallery. So I just have links to them to Save-As on a separate page.
The Blog page will be next, as I am fairly happy with the photos now.

Very Nice, Daniel!

Very nice family site, Daniel. I especially like your use of Gallery2 and the theme.
Chris

Great site Pete

Pete, that looks really cool! Love the curved corners on the Wordpress!  Got a feeling hours will be spent this weekend setting mine up!

Dangerous Curves

There are lots of WordPress themes, but luckily, you can search for the type you want. This one caught my eye, and was simple to install. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Pop filter is in baby! Yeah,

Pop filter is in baby! Yeah, got it on the steps today. which means, hopefully, i can test it out tonight, and you will all be amazed by my clear and amazing non-popiful voice next episode. My powers grow, and the universe expands.
I'm hungry.

Stop the Pops

I'm thinking of making a pop filter with a wire coat hanger and stockings, grabbing my guitar, and coming up with a Linux podcast from my basement home office. I'm sure that's an original idea no one else has thought of. And I'll make up my own songs too. Yeah, that's it. Silly and informative - it'll be a hit for sure.  What do you think? :-)

Actually, you are the master of that stuff, but if you want to hear my greatest hit, it is here:
<http://www.geocities.com/jph04/music/CallOnMeAgain.html> Something else I have to move to Drupal...

Dude, nice song

You the man pete. I love it. I actually do write real songs, rather then funny linux songs at the end of my shows. but I really need to revamp my acousticbasement.com site before I release them to the world.
By the way, I was just in the bathroom and I started whistling your song. Already stuck in my head!

Chat room

If anyone is online and interested. I'm trying out a drupal module called chat room and I've added a link a the top of the main page under the rss feeds to go to the chat room. I'll be in there most of the night if anyone is willing to try it out.

Ok never mind. A special

Ok never mind. A special thanks to Dan for testing out the chat room feature. It was frustrating. I'm going to try and figure out how to set up an IRC channel. Wish me luck!

GoDaddy hosting is being a pain in the neck!

I've been having problems recently.  Every time I tried to go into the modules section I would get this error:
user warning: Lost connection to MySQL server during query query: SELECT filename, name, type, status, throttle, schema_version FROM system WHERE type = 'module' in /home/content/t/e/s/tessandan/html/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 172.

I have finally worked out what it is, after much googling.  The packet size in the mySQL is too low.  GoDaddy set it as 1mb, and you cannot change it.  Wish I'd known that before!  So I had an idea, maybe someone knows if it would work.  Could I have two Drupal installs on the same hosting. The current one is in the root html directory.  If I put another into /drupal2 could I put extra modules in that one, and link them?

The other option is to go with ANhosting, which I nearly did in the first place.

Sorry man, I don't think

Sorry man, I don't think that will work. I had massive problems with ipowerweb and drupal a while back, and if you look on the drupal.org boards there is a bunch of other hosts that have the same problems. It is one of the reasons I go with AN hosting(which i have mentioned before, I am not affiliated with in any way). You can change all of your settings, including your mysql, and php.ini, to make sure you don't have the memory and max_filesize errors. If you just purchased with godaddy, you can probably cancel with them if you let them know it does not meet your needs, and get your money back.
Sorry I don't have a better answer.
On a brighter note, the site is starting to shape up. If you do cancel, make sure to backup your mysql databases, then you can just dump them in to the new database.
Great pictures, you dah man!
Chad

I'll try and cancel

I'll try and cancel GoDaddy.  The only modules I have enabled are: menu, gallery, gallery menu, captcha and captcha image, themesettings api (for roopletheme) then the core modules: block, filter, node, system, user, watchdog

Any more than that and it crashes!

I'll be sure to backup.  Thanks for helping, I appreciate it.  In fact, if it weren't for your podcast, I would be coding regular html and it would look a lot more boring!  So thank you twice!

You bet man, I hope it works

You bet man, I hope it works out for you. When you get back and rolling, some of the modules that my family likes are the recipe module, the birthday module, and I used to put up flash videos using the flash video module, but I'm not sure if that even exists anymore.
Anyway let me know if you run into any other problems.
Chad
