First Impression of the Heron 8.04
Submitted by finux on Sat, 04/26/2008 - 08:18.First Impression of the Heron 8.04
Well i took the dive yesterday and installed Hardy Heron. As usual come Ubuntu release day the servers where tanked and it was going to take for ever to download so i read that a beta with a quick dist-upgrade will do the job, and off i went.
Sidux
Submitted by SkinnyJ on Fri, 04/25/2008 - 16:46.Has anybody else checked out Sidux? I've been using it on my work PC for a little over two weeks now, and I'm not sure if it's cool or not.
Cool: Latest and greatest Debian (even though it's Sid, I haven't had one crash yet), custom scripts to install proprietary drivers, live cd, 32 and 64 bit editions, better hardware detection than 'plain-old' Debian, 'Lite' edition is very quick even though it's KDE (225 MB of used RAM on initial boot!), VirtualBox support right out of the box (XP works great in a VM)

Finux's Guide To Rootkits
Submitted by chad on Thu, 04/17/2008 - 23:50.Hi Linux Basement listeners, and welcome to finux's student hackers guide to Linux, and today's topic rootkit's.
My name is Arron, but you guys can all me finux
Well in today's segment I'm going talk about rootkit's in some detail, now there isn't going to be a practical aspect like last week but more of a discussion. The idea of this guide is to make you aware of rootkit's, what they can do, their history, the varying different type of rootkit's.
roundtable 1
Here is the file in wav format, compressed down to save space for download. I did not do anything to the file other then take out some background noice. no time editing was done.

Pardon me, but I have nothing to say
Submitted by SkinnyJ on Fri, 04/11/2008 - 21:05.Greeting from Idaho Falls, ID aka Land of the Spud-chuckers. Been using Linux since late 2006 when SuSE 10.2 was released. I remember that because I downloaded 10.1, installed it, then 10.2 was released the next week. Kinda ticked me off. But since then, I've spent much of my bandwidth on downloading a ton of Linux distros trying to find that special distro that would make me all warm and fuzzy. Turned out that it is .....
Linux Mint.

Snort - Its not just for druggies anymore
Submitted by chad on Thu, 04/03/2008 - 02:23.
If you've ever had to do any intrusion detection on a large scale network, then you've probably heard of snort. Snort is one of those great success stories of open source. It has been around a long time, and you can read all about it, on their site, at www.snort.org.
