Episode 10 - Dvorak is wrong!

Chad mentioned John C. Dvorak's MySQL comments on Twit in episode 10. I think Dvorak is absolutly wrong. Sun isn't spending $1B to bury MySQL. Even if they tried, they couldn't. MySQL is an open source project that will continue to thrive as long as people keep demanding it.

What Sun wants are the big business support contracts that MySQL the corporation has with the huge users of MySQL. This has been a sucessful business model for other open source companies like Red Hat.

Here is a keyboard and mouse recommendation for Linux power users: The Sun Type 6 USB keyboard and the Logitech MX Revolution laser mouse.

Screen, an Introduction

Article Type:
Tutorial

A very nice little program for you power Linux users is Screen. To quote from the website, "Screen is a full-screen window manager that multiplexes a physical terminal between several processes, typically interactive shells." Well, isn't that a mouthful! More simply, Screen lets you open several terminals at once, each running whichever program you want.

What I like about Linux

Article Type:
Editorial

I use Linux because there are so many different programs and packages to choose from. Even though there are many choices out there for you, no software is perfect for everyone. Open Source Software gives you the ability to customize software to your liking because you have access to the source code.

Chad, thanks for all your tips and tutorials!

Take Care!

Hello from Austria/Europe

Hi!

Thank you Chad for your outstanding podcast.

I've been using Linux for about 5 years now. Actually I came to Linux because a friend of mine gave me a LaTeX-CD for Windows with the advice to check this cool stuff out. Of course this CD disappeared in a stack of other CDs. Being a Windows-User such things as LaTeX or Linux meant nothing to me. I only (thought I) knew that Linux was something for the more experienced users who spent many nights to get their computers up and running ;-)

New Feature - User Submitted Articles

Any users that have signed up on Linux Basement now have the ability to create content on the site in the way of articles. Articles are categorized and you can tag them with the subject of your article as well, so that they are easily searchable later.

All details will be explained in Episode 9, but feel free to go ahead and write and article, reivew, tip or tutorial. There is a new menu item at the top of the site, and a new block dedicated to new user article content.

X2X - make your laptop and desktop screens share resources

Article Type:
Tip

X2X is a great program for users who have two computers and monitors, or a monitor and a laptop, and want to share mouse and keyboard between the two monitors. You have to be using X on both machines. In my case, I have Ubuntu Gustsy on both. To install X2X, on one workstation 1 do:

sudo apt-get install x2x

And on the laptop or second machine do:

sudo apt-get install x2x openssh-server

Now, on worksation 1, just do the following in the command line.

Why I use Linux

Article Type:
Editorial

My reasons for using Linux:

Customizing Drupal - Part 6 Views

In the previous Tutorial, Customizing Drupal - Part 5 Content types, CCK and Taxonomy we learned how to create a new content type with customized fields. Now we want to create several customized views for viewing the content that we create. Enter, Views module. One of the most powerful modules in the Drupal Arsenal. Views allows us to create web pages that display our data any way we want them, sort the data, and show only certain types of data.

Customizing Drupal - Part 5 Content types, CCK and Taxonomy

Now that our site has content, menus, users and access control lists, I think we need to start to add additonal functionality. Today we are going to create a new content type for our site from scratch. All authenticated users will have access to this content type, including the ability to make new content. Then to wrap it up, i will show you how to make a nice view for the content.

Episode 8 - Slappin the Drupal

I think the pop filter did a good job. How did you like the sound quality this week?
Also, would you use an IRC chat if we had one?
Did you like the song this week? I prefer to think of myself as the Sintra of the linux world... hahahahahah
Chad

Customizing Drupal - Part 4 Users and Access Control

By now, you've probably got your site up and running, and you've put some customized conent on your site. Perhaps you've put a few pictures up for your family, and they want a login for your site. You could make it so that a user can only see parts of the site, or certain types of conent, by setting up users, user roles, and then modify the access control for your site.

Lets start by deciding how we want our site to handle new users. Lets go to Administer-->User Management-->User Settings. This is the page where we customize how our site handles users.

Hello From Mississippi

Hello my name is Jeff I live in the wonderful state of Mississippi. I have used various versions of Linux off and on for about three years now. I currently assist with network operations where I work. I'm looking forward to more of your informative podcasts keep up the good work Chad.

Episode 7 - train wreck

Well, it has to happen now and then. My recording sucked. It sounds aweful. I was trying something new to see if i could get rid of the pops I've been having, and I made everything worse. I may do some purchasing this week to try and remedy the problems I've been having. I hope everyone can stomach through the episode.
Chad
**UPDATE** I got fed up listening to the episode again and bought a nice brand new pop filter for my mic. We'll see how it works next week!
