Hello Hello Hello (in an extremely homosexual voice)

I just recently started using Ubuntu a couple of months ago after Leo mentioned Wubi on his The Tech Guy podcast.  After many power outages and angrily reinstalled versions of Ubuntu (if you do a hard reboot while using a wubi install of Ubuntu you have to reinstall it) I finally got another hard drive and natively installed Ubuntu.  I haven't tried any other distros yet although I hope to pretty soon.

Installing Wordpress

Using the Ubuntu LAMP desktop installation that we've previously configured, lets go ahead and install one of the most popular blogging packages on the web, Wordpress. I use wordpress when all I need is a quick and easy blog configuration. While CMS's like Drupal and Joomla are great for building mutlifunctional sites, they sometimes can be overkill for someone who just wants a simple blog site. This is where Wordpress shines.

Databases

Well I don't know why because databases usually put me to sleep or create urges to gnaw off a limb to escape but I did some research on them the other night.  It kind of surprised me to as SQLite caught my eye and I really looked into it.  MySQL uses a lot of memory for larger databases and though it is a great database and a staple in the linux community it's real strength is larger databases on seperate servers.  It turns out for a low to medium volume site such as most blogs and forums SQLite may actually be the better alternative because it doesn't sit in memory.  It

Almost home

Hey everybody. I had a nice holiday vacation and I should be home in the next couple days. I hope everyone had a great holiday. I need to get back on the computer. I am going into shock!!!

Hello from Arkansas

Listening to the latest Podcast for the first time...  Good stuff..  I really enjoy using Linux and have been playing with it for many years.  I work mostly with Redhat at work.   Been a Fedora user at home for several years and have just started using Ubuntu on my home system...

Good Podcast...  Keep it up...

Screwed?

So when I set my server up I came up with really good, strong passwords. That was a couple of weeks ago. Now I'm following along with episode 6 to backup my database. Going into phpmyadmin it seems that I can't reproduce my username and password. Shucks. My fault.

Is there a way to recover this stuff, or should I pull the whole lamp server out by the roots and start over?

Best,
Tom

Downloading the VMWare image of Drupal / Wordpress / Gutsy

Here are the  instructions on  how to  download the Drupal / Wordpress /  Gutsy  VMware image.

         ftp://anonymous@setbit.org@setbit.org/Drupal-Gutsy-VMware.txt

( It looks like a typo, but it's NOT, just leave the password blank )

 Enjoy

Episode 6 - Finding a snowman amongst men

Episode 6 turned out pretty good I think. It became apparent as I was doing it that I need to do a firewall segment. Luckily the guys over at going linux took the burden off me, so check out there newest episode.
Happy Holidays everyone. Head over to www.linuxbasement.com/song if you want to download the holiday song.

Invasion of the XOs

Well I got a surprise in the mail today.  Two XO laptops showed up and I'm in the process of playing with them before I flash to the latest load.  Of course this means nothing without photos.  Sorry for the photo quality but I took some quick snapshots with my phone.  You can tell by the size of the mouse that the keys are tiny.  It's not something I would want to type on every day, but for children it's perfect.

Songs feed

I've posted up a new feed off the main page. You will notice 3 tabs now, mp3, ogg, and songs. I'll be posting up the geeked out songs I do as a seperate feed in case anyone wants to download them seperately. I'll only be posting mp3, but you can email me for the ogg format.

Server Security 101

I know Chad mentioned that it was generally a bad idea to run home servers but I thought I'd write up a bit of help for those who would like to try.  I'm not going to give step by step instructions as any administrator can tell you learning to search for things on the web is a necessary skill.  I'll just point you in the right direction to start learning.

VMWARE Virtual machine

Hello,
I can't find the link to the vmware virtual machine that Chad setup with drupal, moodle etc.
Where's the link again?
Thanks

What's on your desktop?

Since the only thing in my forums are crickets right now I'll post the question here.

What Linux/*nix distro are you running on your main machine(s)?

BlackFlagRebellion

I am currently listening to the BlackFlagRebellion @ Sound Click.com. This is a small project I started a couple of years ago and it took on a life of its own. For some reason I seem to like the thought of going against the man. Maybe that's why I like Linux so much. MS is controlled by the corporations, while Linux is controlled by a community, I'll take the community anytime.
Please give it listen at www.soundclick.com/members/default.cfm

What's on your MP3 Player?

Things I'm listening to right now.
Keller Williams
Counting Crows (never take it off)
Fall Out Boy
Foo Fighters (damnt he drm!)
Jimmy Eat World
John Mayer
White Stripes
I'm looking into the Ben Harper album, but havn't heard it yet... anyone... anyone... bueler?

Show Music

Does everyone think I should continue to make up songs for the end of the show, or go with a more traditional ending? I'm partial to just getting crazy and having fun, but sometimes I feel like my creative juices are dry. I will listen to the people! what do you think?

Customizing Drupal - Part 3 Blocks and Menus

So by  now, you've gone ahead an installed some modules. Attempted to configure them, and of course, checked out some of the documentation on Drupal.org. You wouldn't want me to tell you EVERYthing? Would you?

This weekend's project...

Since building a dedicated Ubuntu Machine to sit next to my XP MAchine, my poor laptop has been neglected (the n800 probably is partially to blame).
It's a P4 2.6ghz HP w/ 1gb RAM (maxed), so it isn't really a slouch and it's running Gutsy just fine.

BUT...  even though it's running Gutsy doesn't mean it's getting any use.  So, I was thinking I'd try my hand at another distro on it.  Maybe something even lighter weight so that it'll be even speedier than it is on Gutsy?

OLPC XO Laptop

Something kinda cool showed up in my email today.  I'd requested a few XO laptops some months back and I'd generally figured that I wasn't going to get them until today.  They're shipping two to me despite the description of what I was going to put them through and the assurance that I'd buy two of the machines as I wasn't going to be gentle with them.  I'm really looking forward to playing with them now.

Episode 5 - Cool Drupal stuff.

Oh yeah. Now we are getting into some gnarly skill building. I'm loving it all to hell.

I did the audio module thing. One hitch: It wants the "Views" module. No sweat. I just learned how to find and install modules. It's running. http://TomsLinuxAdventures.com You probably won't be able to register because I don't know how to get the email engine going yet. The audio file doesn't have a widget to play it on the page. Still, the link lets you play it. Oh, and if the link doesn't work, it's because my cable modem has mood swings.
